Fossil Free Wellesley is an active student run campaign calling on Wellesley College to:

  • Immediately freeze any new investments in fossil fuels.
  • Divest all direct holdings in the largest 200 publicly traded fossil fuel companies within the next 2 years.
  • This divestment should be reviewed once a year for 5 years to evaluate the impact on returns by a committee of students, faculty, administrators and board members while we continue to work towards full divestment from all fossil fuels.

We believe that, as an institution of higher education, Wellesley College has a social obligation to use its $1.5 billion endowment to invest in a sustainable future. Investing its endowment funds in fossil fuel companies helps to destroy the very future that Wellesley is committed to creating–both for its students and for the global community.

As an institution dedicated to the advancement of women and society as a whole–an institution built on the founding values of equal opportunity–Wellesley is known for its dedication to the production of knowledge, and a commitment to service and societal advancement. By investing in fossil fuel corporations, Wellesley is threatening its core values for short-term profits and endangering the future of our climate in the process. We believe that Wellesley has a great legacy to carry forth. We believe that for Wellesley to maintain its integrity and live up to its motto–Non Ministrari sed ministrare–“Not to be ministered unto but to minister,”–the College must take a stand and divest from the extractive industries that are the worst perpetrators of environmental and human rights abuses.
